Pre-start warning before your crane moves

Voice announcement hooter — compliant with IS 3177, Factories Act, and crane safety rules

Every overhead travelling (EOT) crane in India is required by the Factories Act and IS 3177 to give a warning before movement begins. A manual horn operated by the driver is no longer considered adequate in modern material handling facilities — the driver's attention is on the load, not on sounding a horn at exactly the right moment.

The MT-PSH EOT Crane Voice Hooter automates this. When the crane drive is switched on, a voice message plays automatically — "Crane starting, please stand clear" — before movement is possible. The drive interlock ensures the crane cannot move until the pre-start message has completed.

Why voice, not just a horn?

The difference matters for compliance and safety

Unambiguous instruction

A horn tone means different things in different facilities. A spoken message in the worker's language leaves no room for misinterpretation — even workers new to the facility understand immediately.

Drive interlock

The relay output at message completion physically interlocks the crane drive — the crane cannot start moving until the warning has played in full. A manual horn has no such interlock.

IS 3177 compliance documentation

IS 3177 inspectors increasingly ask for documented pre-start warning systems. A voice hooter with drive interlock is a defensible, auditable installation.

How the system works

1

Driver activates crane

Driver turns on the crane drive or presses the start button on the pendant.

2

Dry contact triggers hooter

The pendant start signal is wired to the hooter's dry contact input — activating the pre-start message immediately.

3

Voice message plays

"Crane starting, please stand clear" (in your chosen language) plays at 110–120 dB through the horn speaker mounted on the crane girder.

4

Relay closes at message end

At the end of the message, the hooter's output relay closes — this relay is wired in series with the crane drive contactor. The crane can now move.

5

Worker is clear, operation proceeds

Any worker in the crane bay has had 5–10 seconds to step clear. The crane moves.

Buyers ask us

Can the message be in our regional language?
Yes. Available in Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia. Your message content — recorded in a professional studio — is included in the unit price. Specify the language and message text at order.
Does it interlock the crane drive?
Yes. The relay output at message completion is wired in series with the crane drive contactor. The crane physically cannot start moving until the message has finished playing. This is the key compliance requirement for IS 3177 pre-start warning.
We have multiple cranes — does each need its own unit?
Each crane requires its own hooter unit mounted on that crane's girder. All units can use the same message content. Volume pricing available for multiple-crane orders.
What if the dry contact is from a PLC?
A PLC digital output (24V DC, NPN or PNP) can trigger the hooter via a suitable relay interface. We supply the interface relay if required — specify your PLC output type at order.
How is it mounted on the crane?
The hooter enclosure is DIN-rail or surface mounted inside the crane's electrical panel (typically on the girder). The horn speaker is mounted externally on the girder, pointing downward toward the crane bay floor. Cable between panel and speaker is supplied.
